Netflix ‘Machos Alpha’ premiere on December 30 The new series by the Caballero brothers, the creators of ‘La que se avecina’. created fiction, 10 episodes of 30 minutes time, features Gorka Otxoa and Paula Gallego playing a father and a young daughter who have very different values and visions of reality. On the occasion of the premiere of the series, YOTELE had the opportunity to speak with the two protagonists of this comedy.
What can we expect from the series in general?
Gorka: It’s a hilarious, laugh-out-loud series, with stories and characters that people can empathize with a lot afterwards. I also think that the topics we discussed in the series will resonate with you, but above all, they will have a half-hour pure and difficult entertainment. No matter what ideology they have, they will have a great time.
Paula: I think the same. A drama where the truth eludes us, for laughs and fun. He draws interesting topics that will make us think.
And especially your characters?
Gorka: They are different because there are three couples and we are father and daughter. We can provide another color, another perspective. Especially his 16-year-old character, another vision of equality, gender and machismo. In fact, he’s pretty much the driving force and engine of all these issues, so I’m pondering over these things so I gradually take on his rhetoric to transfer it to my alpha males until I take a course in the deconstruction of masculinity. .
Paula: Yes, I think she’s a 16-year-old girl who brings the thoughts of the new generation and their thoughts on issues like machismo, feminism or equality. I find it interesting that the show evokes youthful thoughts and how we evaluate them and the character we have acquired.
Gorka, we have already seen you in other comedies, was this work different?
All series are different. It’s essentially 30 minutes in length and that’s a very interesting thing because it’s hard to sustain comedy in longer formats. And then with two comedy masters like the Caballero brothers, they have many tools to turn any comedy they make into gold over many seasons and at the same time be watched all over the world. I learned the silences, the gestures with the two of them, and it felt like an apprenticeship to me. Frankly, there were directors with whom I learned a lot, but I regained that illusion of learning and discovery. It was an experience, especially because of the brilliant scenarios that are a pleasure to interpret.
Paula, we normally see you as more serious characters, what made you accept this project? Was it difficult for you to get into character?
It was a discovery because I had never done comedy. It was a challenge as it wasn’t always easy to make people laugh but it was very interesting and with the help of the Caballero brothers it was a very cool and enriching experience.
What has been the easiest and most difficult for you to interpret your characters?
Gorka: I would say different than difficult. Being the father of a 16-year-old daughter, first of all, I’ve never been a father and I’ve never been a father to someone this old, but I think it’s always interesting for an actor to step out of his comfort zone. Create characters that are different from what you’ve done so far, even very different from yourself. And it’s easiest in the sense that we have two commanders who largely control the comedy, both directing and writing. It was also very easy for the players to work with all of them.
Paula: I think somewhat the same. My biggest challenge was doing comedy but it was great and with the whole crew it was really great. My favorite thing about playing Alex is that he’s the manager because I’m not that much.
How does it work with the Caballero brothers and Netflix?
Gorka: It’s enjoyable as they control a lot of comedy by writing, directing and editing. In comedy, every gesture, every silence and who is in the shot is very important. Working with them was a discovery for me because I didn’t even know them. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun because they are both mentally horny. It’s a joy and I look forward to many more seasons to be able to continue working with them.
Paula: I knew them but had not worked with them and it was a very nice experience. It was a pleasure working with them and the entire cast.
Do you have a memory that you can tell about the shootings?
Gorka: We have not one, but many things because we had so much fun. We got very hot in the middle of a heat wave as almost everything we save is in the decoration of our house. Then in March we were very cold. While we were filming on the street next to the portal, a man slammed the door of his shop so we couldn’t shoot, and it finally got resolved in a very interesting way. Various adventures.
Why can’t people miss this series?
Gorka: Because they will have a good time. As they watch the series, they will forget their troubles, their bullshit, and aside from the pure and difficult entertainment that is hard to get, it is obtained here. They will also give an occasional touch to an important issue such as equality, which takes place in the background of the series.
Paula: I think they will have a great time, they will laugh a lot. That’s what we’re looking for in the end, for them to laugh but also to reflect the issues that the show raises in this situation.
