The author of the YouTube channel Addypalooza published a video that he dedicated to the real size of the open world Elden Ring. According to him, it turned out to be much smaller than many initially thought.
As you know, the size of Elden Ring’s open world is estimated at 79 square kilometers. But according to Addypalooza, the map is actually much smaller: 15 square kilometers (or 13.5 square kilometers without taking closed locations into account).
The author explained that he used the distance to two end points to measure the space and then displayed the map scale in an editor, after which he used a special program for analysis. As a result, it ultimately measures 110 square kilometers. However, it turns out that most of this space is inaccessible to the player and represents unused territory. As a result, after additional analysis, the YouTuber concluded that the open world of Elden Ring is 15 square kilometers in size.
I walked through each section of the map, trying to stay as close to a walkable area as possible to get an accurate size of the playable area.

It is notable that the locations from the add-on are taken into account The total map size of Shadow of the Erdtree has increased by 5.52 square kilometers to a total of 20.5 square kilometers.

For comparison: the size of the map The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is 37.1 square kilometers in size, and GTA 5 – 80.3 square kilometers.
