Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have announced that Shrek 5 will release later than planned. Instead of new adventures of the green ogre, viewers will see “Minions 3” from the Illumination studio.
According to Deadline, the studio decided on a recast due to the fact that the Minions franchise has long dominated the box office on Independence Day in the United States. Therefore, the third part of the adventures of Gru’s assistants was postponed from June 30, 2027 to July 1, 2026, replacing the premiere of “Shrek 5”. The latter will now be released six months later – December 23, 2026.
Another castling influenced another untitled project Illumination. Instead of March 19, it will be released on June 30, 2027.
The premiere of “Shrek 5” coincides with DreamWorks Animation’s 25th anniversary. The film is directed by franchise veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, with actors Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz reprising their iconic roles.
Previously, the prototype of Donkey from “Shrek” died in California (USA). Perry the donkey had to be euthanized at the age of 30 due to a serious hoof disease.
