Rust is the corrosion of metal, which occurs when iron comes into contact with water and oxygen. If the appearance of reddish spots is ignored, it can eventually destroy structures and lead to leaks, blockages and malfunctions. Antonina Sinkovskaya, a specialist in the Home Care Products division of Unilever Russia, told socialbites.ca how to get rid of dangerous deposits.
“It is easier to prevent rust from forming than to regularly clean plaque. Modern manufacturers cover plumbing fixtures with a protective layer of enamel, and all metal elements are protected by chrome, but even this does not guarantee a complete absence of plaque, because even the most protected coating wears out and breaks over time,” the expert began.
He also emphasized that the main filter for water purification will help to prevent rust formation on surfaces in the house.
“It is recommended to wipe the bathtub and sink with a dry cloth after each use, and to prevent rust from accumulating on the walls of the toilet, it is enough to regularly check and adjust the flush tank – water should not flow from it. If a leak occurs, this indicates that the drain valve mechanism is worn out and needs to be replaced,” Sinkovskaya advised.
The expert also listed home methods to remove rust.
“In the fight against rust, folk remedies such as vinegar, baking soda, lemon and salt are often used. Vinegar and citric acid destroy rust, while baking soda and salt act as mild abrasives. However, folk remedies require more time and effort to achieve results: to wash off real rust with vinegar, you will need to regularly hold it on the surface for up to several days. Positive dynamics can be observed in the case of using hydrochloric acids, but they are very caustic and can damage the plumbing,” the specialist of the department said.
He also recommended paying attention to the composition and usage recommendations when choosing a rust remover.
“An acidic composition is ideal; they dissolve scale and rust. It is enough to apply such a product for the time required by the instructions, and the dirt will disappear on its own, without the need for long-term scrubbing. It is important to understand that soft organic acids have a wider range of applications: products based on citric and oxalic acids can be used without any risk to remove rust in the bathroom and sink, where the product may come into contact with chrome surfaces. Stronger inorganic acids, hydrochloric and phosphoric, may have restrictions and recommendations for use only in the toilet. This is due to the fact that strong acids damage metal products, such as bathroom drains,” Antonina Sinkovskaya added.
According to him, the effectiveness of the product is also affected by its density and packaging.
“The thicker the gel, the longer the product will be in contact with the contamination on both horizontal and vertical surfaces. This ultimately has a positive effect on plaque dissolution. If rust has formed in the toilet, slanted-neck packaging should be preferred: You can easily apply the product even under the rim and remove rust from hard-to-reach places,” he concluded.
