Turkish director Ferit Karahan’s second magnificent film is a complex social drama set in the psychological thriller genre. An 11-year-old boy living in a boarding school for Kurds in eastern Anatolia as a tool to expose the misery of an authoritarian institution based on a culture of fear. The story exhibits an admirable simplicity on a visual and narrative level as it unravels the mystery surrounding the boy’s discomfort and, in parallel, details the accusations brought among the center’s teachers and administrators. Without using extra shots or wasting a single scene, Karahan offers a series of details and little moments that bring us closer to reality.
His portrayal of adult characters may flirt with cliché, and the occasional use of humor may not find its way into the narrative, but none of that distracts from his character. thick atmosphere of icy suspense where are you wrapping color decisions and camera workNor does it diminish his thoughts on the strong bonds underlying childhood friendships, the abuse of power and the ease of learning by taking this as an example, and the systematic oppression that minorities in Turkey are subjected to.
