Toothpastes labeled “eco,” “bio,” or “natural” may be completely useless for dental health. Svetlana Mandrik, dentist-therapist at Rassvet blades, told socialbites.ca.
“Many of them do not contain dangerous ingredients – sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens and aggressive antiseptics. But there are no ingredients that are beneficial to the teeth,” said the dentist.
According to the expert, natural toothpastes typically contain sodium bicarbonate (i.e. baking soda) and charcoal, which “will scratch the enamel.”
Mandryk added that some state on the packaging that the paste is natural and environmentally friendly, even though it contains chemical ingredients.
The dentist concluded that those trying to avoid chemical ingredients in toothpaste should consider using a toothbrush only.
“After all, we remove plaques mechanically, and our main assistant is a brush,” explained the specialist.
