Starting the New Year’s feast after midnight is harmful to the body. Ph.D., a gastroenterologist from Meditsina JSC (Academician Roitberg clinic), told socialbites.ca. Evgeny Belousov.
“In many families, a tradition is passed down from generation to generation: devote the whole day of December 31 to cooking, eat almost nothing, and on New Year’s Eve, sit down at the table closer to midnight and start eating immediately when the bells ring. However, you should not start a festive dinner exactly at this time; this is detrimental to your health and well-being,” the doctor said.
According to the gastroenterologist, hearty meals eaten the next morning after the “semi-starved ration” cause problems in the gastrointestinal tract, and as a result of the feast, you can seriously gain weight.
Belousov recommended starting the New Year’s meal before midnight.
“Around 22:00 – at this time you can serve the main hot dish and spend the past year with dignity. “It is better to leave lighter dishes on the table until midnight – fruits, vegetable slices, salads (and try to minimize those with added mayonnaise!) and light snacks,” the doctor recommended.
He added that the “one-dish rule” will help prevent weight gain and overeating.
“Put a little of any food on your plate and limit yourself to this portion only for the entire feast, adding nothing else. It’s not easy psychologically, especially away from home. But it is better to be persistent: you definitely will not remain hungry – although the portion will probably be larger than usual,” explained the gastroenterologist.
