Women should see a gynecologist every six months to check the function of their pelvic floor muscles. This is especially necessary to improve intimate life, gynecologist Olga Vergasova at the Aesthetics Clinic told socialbites.ca.
“Unfortunately, women more often turn to the gynecologist with acute processes – this may be pain, menstruation, irritation, the appearance of tumors, cysts or myomas. But less obvious problems, especially those related to the quality of intimate life, are often overlooked. But this can and should also be discussed with a specialist. Therefore, as a preventive measure, it is recommended to visit the gynecologist at least every six months,” Vergasova advised.
The gynecologist explained that dysfunction occurs as a result of sagging of the pelvic floor muscles, which causes the organs to first stretch and then sag.
“Pelvic floor dysfunction in women has its own causes: for example, pregnancy and childbirth, professional sports, excess weight, poor posture, connective tissue dysplasia,” Vergasova said.
The specialist added that symptoms of pathology may include a feeling of heaviness and hyperextension in the lower abdomen and perineum; urinary incontinence during any physical activity, jumping, laughing and sneezing; decreased libido and pain during sexual intercourse; common inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs, such as cystitis and vaginitis.
According to the gynecologist, to solve the problem you should not rely only on the advice of social network bloggers. That is why Pilates and yoga they recommend are only suitable for the prevention of dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles, urological pads do not help to cope with the causes of urine leakage, and folk remedies and uncertified drugs from the market – for example, oily tampons – can aggravate the situation.
The doctor noted that Kegel exercises for the pelvic floor muscles can help, but they must be done correctly under the supervision of a specialist.
“When I ask patients to show how they do Kegel exercises, it turns out that in most cases they do it in a way that does not engage the deep muscles. Therefore, before you start doing Kegel exercises regularly, it is important to make sure that you are doing them correctly and effectively,” Vergasova explained.
