Not unimportant, vintage: what can be turned into “grandmother’s” furniture

In April, Russians began to look for furniture repair and restoration specialists more often. According to the statistics of Avito Services, in April 2022, the demand for furniture repair and assembly services increased by 17% compared to March and by 40% compared to last year. Over the same period, the number of offers increased by 4% (and 24% year-on-year).

Professional craftsmen provide services for upholstery of upholstered furniture, replacement of springs, foam rubber and mechanisms, as well as for the renovation and update of any surface.

“Advertisements on Avito are given by both private manufacturers and craftsmen, as well as small and medium-sized businesses that provide services for the restoration, repair, manufacture and assembly of various pieces of furniture. According to Avito Services, demand for bespoke furniture is growing across the country: in April 2022, the growth dynamics were +35% compared to the same period last year. Construction at “Avito Services” Svetlana Filimonova”.

The highest dynamics of demand growth was observed in Chelyabinsk (+105%), Moscow (+86%), Kazan (+67%), Ufa (+66%) and Rostov-on-Don (+57%).

“Service providers often post service offers for bespoke room dividers, kitchen sets, wardrobes, doors, dressers, cabinets, walls and children’s furniture,” Filimonova said.

How and where to update old furniture

“In Russia, what is called “ancient” in other countries is considered by many to be unimportant. If something like this is back in fashion, it’s definitely due to a misunderstanding. At the same time, the majority does not refer to too “outdated” furniture in modern models. Vintage has always been fully appreciated by experts, and now fashion has come to it. More and more people became interested in objects with a history, if not very distant. Furniture from the 1950s and 70s is particularly valuable,” explained decorator and interior stylist Nelli Muratova.

According to the decorator, you need to be frugal with things now – and it’s not even about the fashion for recycling objects. Many designers and decorators are faced with the problem of lack of choice of interior items due to the exit of so many furniture and decor brands from the market.

“There are carpentry and craftsmen who save you from famine, but the downside is that you can’t see it, try the inside and then decide whether to buy it or not. Usually such a procedure is carried out by order and prepaid. Therefore, here you need to think about whether it is worth getting rid of old furniture, or do you just need to update it? – said the designer.

He noted that in the modern interior you can use everything from “grandmother’s” furniture, except satin, satin curtains and tulle.

“You can definitely breathe new life into anything. For example, I found old engravings in the cottage, decorated them with a new mat. And the piece of art with history is ready! And you can always turn old curtains into pillowcases or make napkins. I especially like to change linen or cotton, they are suitable for absolutely any service ”

– Adopted Nelli Muratova.

If all the old chairs and sideboards have already been sent to the landfill, old furniture can be found on social networks. Many different shops and showrooms sell vintage items from different eras and countries, as well as restoring old models. Those who still hang their shirts in the “Zhdanovskiy” closet may not be ashamed of the old-fashionedness of their interior – and, if necessary, turn to furniture repairmen to update it.

How to use vintage in the interior

The vintage trend has been in the interior for a long time. Many designers use furniture pieces that their owners already have in their projects, or opt for restoration rather than buying new products, choosing especially antique furniture.

Nina Tsennykh, a specialist in the Modi chain of stores, noted that in recent years the cinema-folk style has been especially in demand – a combination of modern minimalist elements and things from the “grandmother’s chest”.

“Any large furniture is suitable for the interior: a sideboard, wardrobe or nightstand. It is enough to arm yourself with paint and add shine to the subject. And it is not necessary to strive for the ideal! Roughness, streaks of paint, uneven coloring are allowed, and partial coloring is also in fashion: only a part is painted (for example, facades) and the legs remain the same ”

– advised Tsenny.

At the same time, interior stylist Nelly Muratova warns: although old furniture can be used in any apartment, moderation is important.

“It’s important not to go overboard so that the interior doesn’t smell of mothballs and look antique. In order not to overdo it and not miss the purchase, it is best to contact the decorator, ”Muratova suggested.

One of the problems faced by designers when creating an old interior is the need to adapt modern technology to it. For example, in the kitchen Nelly Muratova suggests limiting herself to chairs.

“It is better to make the kitchen modern, ideally in light plain colors, with brass handles and a solid wood countertop. Household appliances – built-in or concealed type. For such a kitchen it is easier to take old chairs and English service. For coffee lovers, a geyser coffee machine and a nice coffee pair are suitable.”

space decoration

The space should be decorated in accordance with the chosen style. Interior stylist and decorator Nina Tsennykh, an expert on the Modi chain of stores, noted that the trend now is to use vintage for other purposes.

“For example, an old bag or suitcase can be used as a closet and a lamp and a photo frame can be placed on it and a stool can be turned into a small coffee table with a minimalist vase in the middle. You can also be creative and play with the object more actively: for example, replace the legs and handles of the cabinet with modern ones, and leave the facade the same. Or take an old photo frame and complement it with a modern poster in the underground style, ”says Tsennykh.

Russians began to turn to restoration workshops that repair furniture more often – this means that in apartments there will be more sofas and Viennese chairs from the 60s. According to the designers, the country has finally caught up with the vintage fashion trend – previously such things were considered garbage and thrown into the landfills. socialbites.ca learned from experts how to use “grandmother’s” furniture correctly and create a modern interior.
