British-French singer and actress Jane Birkin has died after a long battle with cancer. It has been reported daily mail.
Singer, actress and director Serge Gainsbourg’s muse, Jane Birkin, died on July 16 at the age of 77. The body of the star was found by her guardian, who came to visit the singer at her home in Paris. According to the Daily Mail, the star’s cause of death was leukemia, which Birkin had been battling since 2002. The singer described her illness as “not a very painful cancer”, but canceled her planned concerts in May 2023 due to her deteriorating health.
“I’ve always been a huge optimist and I understand that I need some time to get back on stage and be with you,” Jane Birkin said in a statement.
Born in London in 1946, Jane Birkin moved to France in the late 1960s, where she developed her acting career and met French chansonnier Serge Gainsbourg. She released the world-famous song “Je t’aime … moi non plus” with him. In 1971 Birkin and Gainsbourg had a never-married daughter (one of Jane Birkin’s three daughters), later the famous actress and musician Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Birkin was awarded the Order of the British Empire and the French Order of National Merit. Besides acting and musical merit, Hermès Birkin also gave his name to the handbag.
