What kind of men come for hair removal?
As Ekaterina Vasilyeva, the chief physician and cosmetologist of the ARTLEO clinic, told socialbites.ca, about half of the men who go to beauty salons for hair removal are actors, dancers, athletes and chefs.
“There are also many men for whom the aesthetic factor is important. As a rule, these are young people who enter for fitness and “form” their figure. They come with a desire for smooth skin on the abdomen, back and private areas.
Yulia Karaseva, head of the Sensavi Beauty Institute, noted that in recent years, male epilation has ceased to be a “shameful” thing and more and more young people of all ages and professions are applying for this service.
“It occurred to men that hair removal is a hygiene procedure, not an indicator of sexual preference. The stereotype that a man is gay if he epilates has long been a thing of the past,” she said.
According to him, among his clients are men who come to the procedure at the request of his wife or girlfriend. As a rule, these are young people from 25 to 40 years old.
“Many women think that their partner’s increased hairiness is not aesthetic. And even a large amount of body hair showing increased testosterone does not save. And women send men for hair removal. Men shout but bear it,” she explained.
For him, the boom in men’s hair removal set the trend for shaving neck hair.
“Then gym regulars became close friends with razors because the less hair there is, the less odor comes when you sweat. And a bulging trunk without vegetation looks more attractive, ”she added.
What epilation do men do?
According to Karaseva, the area most frequently epilated in men is the neck area, because regular shaving often causes ingrown hairs, which in turn causes inflammation.
“Epilation of this area is not the wax, as a rule, but the work of the devices. Waxing is painful and often causes irritation. And with the help of a series of light apparatus procedures, you can align the hairline and permanently get rid of unwanted vegetation, ”explained.
Ekaterina Vasilyeva admitted that neck hair removal remains the most popular demand for men. In the second row – epilation of the armpits, in the third – the area between the eyebrows.
“But there are those who apply for full body epilation. Males remove hair from their arms, legs, chest, back and abdomen. Increasingly, customers are coming who want to permanently get rid of hair in the intimate areas, ”said the artist.
At home or in the living room
According to Vasilyeva, despite the growing popularity of the procedure, many men are embarrassed to resort to specialized beauty centers. The specialist said he and his colleagues had to “rescue” such people multiple times from irritation, ingrown hairs and inflammation after trying home remedies for hair removal.
“I had a client who decided to shave her hair with her husband’s epilator. Someone else bought wax strips for hair removal. I would forbid the sale of this product to men! Anyone can stick a strip of wax on, but it’s rare to pull the strip to remove hair without damaging the skin. “We urgently took men to clinics who had several times glued strips on their backs, stomachs and even hips,” he said.
Yulia Karaseva added that such manipulations without skill can lead to serious injuries, and a hematoma on the skin is the smallest of them.
“If you still want to do the procedure at home, use a razor or depilatory cream. But remember that the hair will grow back very quickly and this stubble, especially in the private areas, will cause you a lot of discomfort,” the expert warned.
Which method to choose
Experts are in solidarity on this subject: Before choosing a hair removal method, the degree of skin and hair density should be evaluated by a dermatologist. There are two most common methods of removing unwanted hair today – nap and waxing. In the first case, the hair is removed with sugar syrup, in the second – with a special wax for depilation.
“It’s fast and relatively painless, but the result will take only 2-3 weeks. After the procedure, first small and fine hairs will appear, then they will become denser and longer, and everything will return to normal, ”explained Ekaterina Vasilyeva.
Electrolysis became popular in the mid-2000s, but due to the high pain of the procedure and the emergence of alternative methods to deal with unwanted hair, this method is practically not used today.
“How many women wept in pain during these procedures! Electric discharge destroys the hair root, the process had to be repeated 6-8 times. It is good that there are almost no such devices left in Russia, it was replaced by a more efficient and painless laser,” said Vasilyeva.
Julia Karaseva clarified that the laser technique is based on the destruction of follicles, that is, hair follicles. During the procedure, laser energy acts on melanin, the pigment of the hair concentrated in the shaft and hair follicle, and is transmitted down the hair, heating the follicle, as a result, it is destroyed and hair growth stops. .
“In general, men calmly tolerate laser hair removal, but it is clear that they do not like waxing. The procedure takes 10-20 minutes, depending on the area, and after 5-8 sessions, the hairs stop permanently. And most importantly, it is practically painless, which is especially important for men, “he said.
