The mid-century style emerged in the postwar years and became a blend of Soviet constructivism, Scandinavian and American styles. Modern designers are increasingly turning to the middle of the century, adapting it to modern realities. In addition, the creation of such an interior does not require large expenses – you can use old furniture for interior decoration and buy decor in low-priced stores.
Ksenia Kuznetsova, the specialist, product director of Mr.Doors, highlights four main elements among all the style characteristics: color, softness, geometry and use of brass.
Colors and shadows
“The 70s are characterized by a real riot of colours. You are almost unlimited in choice. And here, dusty calm shades are quite organically combined with bright, contrasting colors. And if you are not ready to radically change the color of the walls or furniture, then you can dilute a completely neutral interior with accent decor items. This is especially true for those who live in areas where the daylight hours are short and you want additional bright colors,” Kuznetsova explained.
He added that the mid-century style is characterized by geometric prints. When decorating walls, ceilings and floors, as a rule, materials of neutral colors are used, but accent areas are always added.
softness in everything
“Besides creativity and a bit of eccentricity, the interiors of this period embody calmness and complete relaxation,” explained the expert.
According to Kuznetsova, the following pieces of furniture and textiles should be chosen: sofas that allow you to sit almost lying down, poufs, soft wall panels, all kinds of faux fur textiles and even carpets.

Geometry
“The 70s are a true tribute to geometry in space. Here the rectangle is easily combined with the circle, and the graphic prints literally fill the existing surfaces from floor to ceiling. Ball-shaped chandeliers and lamps are accentuated in rectangular and square rooms, while furniture, including kitchenware, takes on rounded, streamlined shapes.”
Kuznetsova believes that special attention should be paid to diagonal lines, they were the main reference points in the creation of design concepts at that time.
Rice
“In the 70s, rice gained unprecedented popularity. This metal is less flashy than gold, it looks elegant and restrained. In the interiors of that time, brass decor, accessories, individual accents are pieces of furniture, ”concluded Kuznetsova.
Interior designer and interior stylist Elena Karasaeva adds a course on organizing the space by clearing everything unnecessary for proper lighting, use of wood, mixing materials, emphasis on appliances, and the four main components of style.
According to Karasayeva, the interior in the mid-century style does not allow you to give new life to old grandmother’s furniture and throw it away to the delight of junkers.
“Designers are in favor of restoring pieces of Soviet furniture inherited from relatives, because this is an easy and economical way to not only consolidate memories, but also update the interior. This type of furniture is perfectly suited for restoration and fits the mid-century style,” Karasaeva explained.

Lighting
Large and panoramic windows are also attributed to mid-century style features. If we talk about artificial lighting, a combination of different lamps is relevant here.
“When using not only floor lamps, but also lamps of a wide variety of colors and shapes, various lighting scenarios will not only fill the space with light, but also become an interior decoration,” Karasaeva said.
mixing materials
The mid-century is characterized by a combination of materials such as wood and glass – but you should pay attention to the plastic, it fits the style perfectly – it was popular in the middle of the century. Various lamps, flower pots and organizers in bright colors fit perfectly into the interior.
White goods accent
“In the mid-century style, household appliances are not hidden, but emphasized. The technique of bright and rich colors in retro style is the perfect companion for this style. The mid-century is increasingly intertwined with minimalism and Scandinavian style, which is expressed in built-in solutions,” explains Karasaeva.
clear the clutter
The designer also emphasized that it is important to approach interior design with a sense of taste and proportion. Crowded spaces create a sense of clutter. Beautiful boxes, organizers and tidy bookshelves will help create a clean and cozy interior.
