Ballerina Anastasia Volochkova has stated that she will not pursue litigation against the Bolshoi Theatre, amid ongoing concerns about corruption within the famed institution. The remarks were reported by super.ru.

She reflected on a different era of the case, noting that in 2003 the jury and the theater were operating under distinct circumstances. Today, she said, money and corruption appear intertwined with the Bolshoi Theatre, making it clear that she and the institution are not on equal footing. She asked, essentially, where she stands in relation to those who are funded by the theater.

Volochkova indicated that her lawsuit was a public effort to highlight what she described as chaos on the country’s premier stage. She recalled that both her attorney and she felt misled as the Bolshoi’s respondents cited passages from her art book as supporting documents. She asserted that the process revealed a troubling mismatch between the tangible claims and the theater’s defensive maneuvers.

The case resurfaced in April 2023 when Volochkova filed a suit with the Supreme Court against the Bolshoi Theatre, seeking 95 million rubles for 18 years of professional work. Earlier, in 2022, she had filed a similar complaint with the Tverskoy District Court, which was ultimately rejected. The artist is currently awaiting a ruling from the Supreme Court on the new filing, with dispositions reflecting a continued clash over compensation and governance at the institution.
