Valencia Institute of Culture and the Valencia Audio-Visual Academy (AVAV), organizers of the Berlanga Awards, which recognize Valencia-based audiovisual work throughout the year, announced nominations for their fifth edition. A total of 51 productions from the Valencian Community are in the running. While detailed candidate lists are not disclosed yet, productions from Alicante such as Jaibo Films with the short film Hardcore by Adam Aliaga and the documentary feature Longest Life by David Valero, both from San Vicente del Raspeig, alongside Suica Films, including works by Oriolana Elena Lopez Rivera, are anticipated to move into the candidate phase at a later stage.

The Berlanga Awards acknowledge films and other audiovisual works released between December 4, 2021 and December 31, 2022 for cultural or entertainment value, proudly highlighting the creative, artistic, and technical merits of professional Valencian companies in the local audiovisual industry. The awards uphold the idea that artistic innovation and technical excellence deserve recognition within the region.

In this fifth edition, the slate includes feature films, short films, TV series, and video games across 24 competition categories. Categories span fiction feature and documentary feature, animated feature, directing, screenwriting, original music, leading and supporting roles, editing and post-production, photography and lighting, art direction, production management, sound, costume and makeup, and hairdressing; plus fiction short films, documentary shorts, animated shorts, fiction series, animated series, documentary series, and video games.

As in previous years, Best Animated Film and Best Documentary Series are among the categories that may see adjustments, with final decisions resting with the AVAV Board of Directors based on the awards themselves. Members of the technical teams involved in these productions may compete within their professional categories as well.

Among the candidates, Best Fiction Feature Film comprises six productions, while eight contenders vie for Best Documentary Feature Film. Short film categories include 14 fiction shorts, 10 documentaries, and 3 animated shorts. In the animation section, two projects appear as candidates, and four fiction projects are submitted for television, with an additional web series entry.

The video game category features two Valencian-produced titles. This is the only category where Academy members do not vote; an expert jury awards the prize.

In addition to the competitive awards, an Honorary Award will be announced on October 20 in recognition of a Valencian audiovisual personality’s professional and artistic career, especially for their work in supporting and developing the regional culture industry.

voting calendar

The submission period closed on September 5. Academics may vote from September 27 to October 16, with a second round to determine the nominees in each category beginning on October 21 and concluding on November 6.

The Valencia audiovisual awards ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, November 12, at the Auditori de Castelló and will be broadcast live by À Punt, delivering the highlights of Valencian creativity to a broad audience.
