A star actress returns to the saga, leading a new chapter on the big screen. She will headline a trilogy directed by three different filmmakers, portraying Jedi Master Rey in the concluding episodes of the Star Wars saga. The project is associated with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, announced the development during a recent annual gathering in London. The event, known as Star Wars Celebration, marks its first European edition since 2016.
The audience was surprised when the actress was introduced to fans at the celebration, where the big news was confirmed. In addition to Obaid-Chinoy, the trilogy will be guided by Dave Filoni and James Mangold.
Mangold, a filmmaker with roots tied to a notable recent franchise, will craft a story set after the events of the prior trilogy and episode IX. The narrative will explore Rey forging a new Jedi order following the rumored defeat of the dark side.
Meanwhile, Mangold’s project will unfold alongside Filoni’s work, which includes his own contributions to the broader Star Wars universe. Filoni is also associated with developing the New Republic era, a central thread in many Disney+ series such as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, continuing the legacy after the fall of the Empire.
Among the live-action series linked to this era is Ahsoka, widely anticipated by fans. The trailer preview at the celebration features the lead actor, Rosario Dawson, in the title role. Ahsoka, a fan favorite from The Mandalorian, teases a dark omen with the line, Something is coming, something dark, I can feel it. The series is slated for Disney+ to arrive in August, with Hayden Christensen expected to reprise the role of Anakin Skywalker.
Attendees were also treated to an exclusive early look at a new drama in development titled Skeleton Crew, starring Jude Law and supported by a diverse ensemble of young performers. The premise evokes the adventurous spirit of the 1980s classic The Goonies. Filmmakers attached to Skeleton Crew include Jon Watts, David Lowery, The Daniels, Jake Schreier, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Lee Isaac Chung, each contributing to the episodic direction of the project.
