Exploring Sorolla is set to unfold across several days, allowing the renowned “painter of light” to be presented by a lineup of famed experts. The initial two sessions will take place this week, with the remainder of the program spreading through May across Elche, Crevillent, Xàbia, and Alicante.

In partnership with the Elche City Council, Calahorra Tower will host the opening on Wednesday at 18:00, led by Javier Brotons, a professor of Geography and History and a presenter at the IES Nit de l’Albà in Elche. The event, Sorolla’s Palm Grove: The Birth of an Extraordinary Work, will be followed by A Dangerous Little Beauty, led by a Fine Arts professor from Altea, Miguel Lorente, at 19:30.

On Thursday, March 23, at 19:00, Carlos Reyero, curator of the exhibition Black Sorolla and Professor of Art History at the Autonomous University of Madrid, will present It Is a Black Color. Another Look at Sorolla, exploring the painter’s darker palette and its implications.

The May lectures continue after the homage events marking the painter’s death. On the 9th in Crevillent, Ana Satorre, director of the José Candela Lledó Cultural Center, will lead the discussion. On the 10th in Xàbia, the Generalitat Valenciana Sorolla Year commissioner and director of the Valencia Museum of Fine Arts, Pablo Gonzalez Tornel, will participate. Two lectures are scheduled for May 18 and 19 at the Casa Bardin in Alicante, with the exhibition’s curator, Luis Alberto Pérez Velarde, presenting Sorolla’s Origins. Pedro J. Martínez Plaza, a 19th-century painting curator at the Prado Museum, will contribute his insights as well.

The Alicante Provincial Assembly participates in the Commemoration Commission established by the Generalitat Valenciana to celebrate the anniversary through the Cultural Institute of Alicante Juan Gil-Albert and its cultural director. Pilar Tebar serves as deputy commissioner of the team led by Pablo González Tornel. The Mubag of Alicante inaugurated the exhibition last January, Sorolla and Valencian Painting of His Time, with the highlight being Dialogues and Contrasts, on view until June 25.

Help with Journals 2023

The program offers grants of up to 1,800 euros per printed journal. As in previous years, cultural entities with verifiable legal status and journals that publish humanities research relevant to the Alicante province or beyond the university environment may apply.
