A captivating glimpse into Hollywood’s golden era, where bananas, peanuts, and the saga of Gone with the Wind collide in a playful, sharp stage piece. This version, crafted by José Troncoso and guided by Ron Hutchinson, features the actors Gonzalo de Castro, Pedro Mari Sánchez, José Bustos, and Carmen Barrantes in a brisk, comic exploration of a historic film’s production misadventures.
The show unfolds over six days, tracing how the making of the legendary film became a financial juggernaut while the footage itself teetered on the edge of disaster. It blends laughter with weighty themes, offering more than mere entertainment.
During a montage scene of the original shoot, the project falters like a gust of wind. Producer David O. Selznick interrupts the flow to rework the film, hoping to preserve the vision while avoiding the costly delays. Time stretches, and every pause drains the purse a little more.
Accompanied by his shrewd and dependable secretary, Ms. Poppenghul, Selznick gathers two towering minds in his office. His trusted screenwriter Ben Hetch stands beside the brilliant yet stubborn director Victor Fleming to sort out the chaos.
Yet the trio does not bet on the lasting appeal of a tale set in the Civil War, led by a heroine named Red O’Hara who exudes confidence and moral ambiguity. They will argue, again and again, about the film’s direction, while Selznick remains steadfast in pursuing his true artistic intent.
