After the latest edition’s remarkable reception at the Spanish Theater Exhibition of Contemporary Writers, María Goiricelaya returns to Alicante with a new adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s classic. The production will be staged at Teatre Arniches in Alicante on Thursday, November 9, at 20.00. This version of La Dramatica Errante, which won the 2023 Max Award for Best Adaptation or Version of a Theater or Choreographic Work, spotlights a woman in her thirties navigating the challenges of conceiving a child.
XXXI Theater Exhibition spotlights fresh voices, audience diversity, and lively debate
This production, written and directed by a Bilbao-born playwright, director, actor, and theater researcher, emerges from a need to reexamine some of Lorca’s themes and bring them into today’s context. The energetic exploration centers on the distinction between biological reproductive age (20 to 30) and social reproductive age (30 to 40), along with the ethical, philosophical, and psychological questions that accompany this topic. It also addresses the pressure, scrutiny, and stigma that many women in the West face when delaying or facing fertility challenges.
“Making theater means dedicating oneself to something that seems impossible.”
Goiricelaya’s adaptation is presented as a bold, silent conversation with Lorca’s original work. The director notes that the new script carries the voices of women who confront the modern dilemma of motherhood amid a fast-paced, image-driven society. The central characters are successful women who juggle careers, travel, social life, and polished appearances, yet they share a longing for motherhood that remains unfulfilled. The play portrays a friction between personal desire and biological timing, underscored by a social landscape that often minimizes or overlooks this struggle. The director describes the protagonist as someone who seeks a dream that tests both emotional resilience and personal choices, inviting audiences to reflect on how contemporary feminism intersects with reproductive realities.

The Lorca legacy also presents another option within the XXXI edition’s program: an exterior installation by Recreativos Federico.
