Although it was scheduled for a March 2023 release, the first glimpse of the film adaptation of the tabletop favorite arrived with great fanfare at Comic-Con, the flagship event for entertainment enthusiasts. The upcoming fantasy adventure stars Hugh Grant, Regé-Jean Page, Chris Pine, Sophia Lillis, Michelle Rodriguez, and Justice Smith, with Paramount Pictures steering the long in development project that mixes humor and adventure on screen.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is the official title. The plot centers on a band of explorers who embark on a bold mission to recover a relic lost to myth and legend, promising a blend of action, wit, and camaraderie that mirrors the spirit of the beloved game.

Comic-Con marked a high point for the campaign. After two years of waiting for a physical edition, organizers opened with a screening of the opening minutes and a press briefing featuring the full ensemble. The filmmakers emphasized a playful tone rarely seen in this genre. Director duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein described the project as carrying a camaraderie unique to the game, a vibe that aims to translate the tabletop experience to a cinematic scale for audiences in North America and beyond.

The Dungeons & Dragons film universe is not without history. A previous live-action adaptation released in 2000, directed by Courtney Solomon and featuring Justin Whalin, Jeremy Irons, and Thora Birch, did not perform well with critics or at the box office. It grossed roughly 33.8 million dollars worldwide. The franchise did see two sequels in later years, Wrath of the Dragon God (2005) and The Book of Vile Darkness (2012), which appeared with modest attention and limited theatrical impact, not challenging the top tier of fantasy cinema in North America or overseas.
