Discovered paths in Valencian contemporary art

An exercise in discovery

In Altea, the culture council and local leadership showcased an exhibition that invites visitors to rethink space, home, and memory as foundational elements shaping identity. The presentation emphasized a collective and nuanced view of how these factors influence who we are and how communities come together to understand themselves.

The Valencia regional government’s contemporary art collection serves as a springboard for a broader tour that highlights the Valencian Community. The display presents a panorama where different styles and generations converge, underscoring the unity of artistic voices across time and place.

Officials highlighted that this growing body of work strengthens individual and social identity, two pillars at the heart of the exhibition’s mission. The collection acts as a living archive, reflecting the evolving story of the region and its people.

An exercise in discovery

The culture councilor from Altea stressed that Palau Altea will host the exhibition until November 12, offering a platform for innovative visions from remarkable artists who embrace discovery through sculpture, painting and video. The aim is to push the boundaries of creativity and to foster new ways of understanding the world and our relationships within it.

The show brings together works by eleven artists. It includes four creators from Alicante — Carmen Ortiz, Joan Sebastián, Oliver Johnson, Pepa López Poquet — and Rebeca Plana, who lives or works in the province of Valencia, alongside Laura Palau and Pascual Arnal from Castellón and Valencia respectively. The regional mix demonstrates a diverse spectrum of local talent.

ArContemporary of the Generalitat

The works on view trace back to a 2017 initiative by the Generalitat Valenciana, which began acquiring more than a hundred pieces without strict generational boundaries or fixed thematic constraints. The aim was to address the social realities of the moment through contemporary art that resonates across audiences.

This initiative has supported artists born or residing in the Valencian Community, balancing gender representation and weaving a shared memory of the era through a broad, community-wide program managed by the Consortium of Museums of the Valencian Community.

Contemporary Art of the Generalitat Valenciana grows from the need to elevate and sustain the regional arts scene by recognizing artists and works that offer a wide view of current practices and leave a lasting cultural legacy for future generations.
