BRICS Cultural Forum and Multipolar World: Putin Calls for Cultural Preservation and Regional Peace

Russian President Vladimir Putin has invited BRICS nations to participate in a cultural forum planned in St. Petersburg, extending an invitation at a broadened BRICS summit format. The event schedule for 2023 places the forum from November 16 to 18. Putin underscored that cultural and civilizational diversity stands as a cornerstone of the emerging multipolar world order, and he highlighted the role of cultural preservation even amid ongoing security operations that Russia has conducted in recent years.

Putin emphasized Russia’s commitment to supporting people who protect their culture, traditions, and language, and who safeguard their future. He stated that the guiding principle behind Russia’s actions in Ukraine is to end the war launched by Western powers and their Ukrainian allies against residents of the Donbass region, a goal he described as essential for regional peace and stability.

BRICS is defined as an interstate association comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The bloc was formed during a gathering in St. Petersburg in June 2006, with involvement from the economic ministers of the founding members, and it originated in conjunction with St. Petersburg’s ongoing economic forum activities. The grouping seeks to foster dialogue and cooperation across major emerging economies and has evolved into a significant platform for addressing global economic challenges.

In a separate update, Putin noted progress on the restoration of a conservatory building in St. Petersburg, clarifying timelines for its completion. This project is viewed as a symbol of cultural renewal and a reminder of Russia’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding its historic institutions and artistic heritage.

Earlier reporting from South Africa highlighted remarks attributed to Xi Jinping through various channels, reflecting the broad international interest in BRICS discussions and the shared priorities among member states. The conversations at these forums continue to shape how BRICS members coordinate on economic development, cultural exchange, and regional security in the modern world, with a continued focus on inclusive growth and mutual respect for diverse civilizational identities.
