Masters of the Air: From John Shiban and John Orloff

Spiritual successor to Band of Brothers and The Pacific, produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Masters of the Air adapts Donald L. Miller’s documentary work with the same name and follows the pilots of the US Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group, a unit nicknamed the Bloody 100th for their heavy losses in World War II. Four of the nine episodes were directed by Cary Fukunaga. The cast features Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Barry Keoghan, Shuti Gatwa and others, delivering a look at grit, courage, and the cost of war.

This psychological thriller from Alfonso Cuarón explores a journalist who discovers he has become one of the central characters in a novel that unveils a major secret. This adaptation of Liu Cixin’s sci fi saga centers on humanity’s first contact with alien intelligence. The series comes from the minds behind Game of Thrones, bringing a grand, thought-provoking narrative to the screen.

Cyberslav: Created by Stas Dmitriev, Dmitry Yakovenko and Alexandra Kretchman

Where to watch: Kinopoisk, release schedule unknown.

An expansive animated world in the vein of ancient Slavic cyberpunk. The story weaves together heroes, spirits, robots and neon architecture in a setting where a hybrid investigator unravels a brutal crime connected to a princely dynasty.

True Detective: Nightland: Issa López and Nic Pizzolatto

Where to watch: HBO begins January 15.

The crime anthology returns with a new pair of leads. Set in an Alaskan town, the case centers on the disappearance of eight researchers from a remote station. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star as the investigators guiding the investigation through a chilling, atmospheric mystery.

Penguin: Creature of Gotham by Lauren Lefranc

Where to watch: Max, anticipated in the latter half of the year.

This Gotham-centered drama follows Oz Cobblepot as he rises within the city’s criminal underworld. Colin Farrell returns as the Penguin, with Cristin Milioti joining the cast. The project is developed by Lauren Lefranc, known for her work on notable but lesser-known sci-fi shows.

Crime and Punishment: Vladimir Mirzoev and Vladimir Maslov

A modern adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s classic, reimagined by Dmitry Glukhovsky. The action unfolds in contemporary St. Petersburg, where a moneylender becomes the ominous center of a tense, morally fraught narrative. A darkly comic spy thriller based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel. Hoa Xuande stars as a Viet Cong spy navigating loyalty, identity and survival in a divided postwar era, with a sharp, cinematic lens that critics applaud. Expatriates: Lulu Wang

A drama following the vibrant lives of a close-knit immigrant community. Lulu Wang leads the project with a cast featuring renowned talent and direction that captures both tenderness and resilience in a world far from home.
