Aspe again makes room for Netflix and becomes a filming location once more as the French period drama Nero returns to shoot its second season in the Medio Vinalopó area. The production has started its second run in the Upanel site, according to the municipality of Aspe this Monday.

Thus the town reaffirms its role as a hub for the film industry, chosen again as a setting for Nero’s sophomore season, a project produced for a streaming platform.

From the town hall, officials highlighted that this shoot places Aspe on the map of international productions and underscored the opportunity it represents for the locality, emphasizing its potential as a filming destination.

The mayor of Aspe, Antonio Puerto, stressed the significance of this production, saying that placing Aspe on the cinematic map is a meaningful achievement that not only showcases local heritage but could also pave the way for future shoots in the town.

The Rio de Aspe fortress and the Los Algezares natural area have already served as locations for this series, as previously reported this outlet in May. The French production has also shot this summer at the Ciudad de la Luz studios in Alicante, with some scenes filmed around the fortress and its environs.

Plot

Nero is an adventure and action series set in southern France during the 16th century. It follows the story of a hired killer who serves a power-hungry noble and must protect his own daughter, whom he barely knows, from those who wish to kill her. The journey unfolds for Nero and his daughter through a drought-stricken France, accompanied by an aging monk and the nobleman’s daughter, betrothed to a princely wedding.

According to the production company, the antihero ultimately becomes a hero to save his daughter from the threats looming over the world.

The Diputación de Alicante and the Costa Blanca tourism board reached out to the Aspe mayor after learning that the producer had already booked the first season’s locations.

The town council noted that the Los Algezares natural park has distinctive features that attract producers. This same appeal has led other productions to shoot at the Bridge of Five Eyes, they added.

Extras

For the first season, the production company held castings to select extras for the French project. Requirements included avoiding modern hairstyle or coloring, no visible tattoos or piercings, and a preferably slim build.
