Celebrating its next edition from June 3 to June 10, the Alicante International Film Festival will showcase six films this year, two more than last year. The lineup includes works linked to Eva Vizcarra, Manuel de Juan Navarro, Ramon Margareto, Angela Aguilar, Alejandro Iodice, Dani Alberola, Angel Puado, and Salvador Monleón.

The first guest film to be screened in the festival’s history is set for June 4 at Kinépolis. Uncensored Woman by Eva Vizcarra—an artist who has received recognition at the Malaga Festival and more recently the Berlanga Awards—will premiere in cinemas. Based in Valencia, this documentary tracks a group of actresses who decide to walk away from the screen naked, as a bold act of freedom during a tense moment in Spain’s transition. In a society marked by stigma and a prevailing machismo, these women reflect a closed culture back at itself through their naked presence and personal transcripts.

Eva Vizcarra’s painting Mujeres sin censura opens the invited films section.

Three Deaths of Teófilo del Valle, a feature by Manuel de Juan Navarro, had its premiere in Petrer and is currently competing at DocsValència. It will be shown on Monday, June 5, at Kinépolis. The film follows the life of Teófilo del Valle and his encounter with the workers’ mobilization in Elda on February 24, 1976. An armed policeman shoots him six times in the back. It marked the first police killing under the monarchy of Juan Carlos I. A judge resists pressure to remove incriminating evidence about a police officer. This is a cinematic examination of the Transition told through the perspective of a father and his son as witnesses.

Also on Monday, June 5, in the El Corte Inglés Cultural Area, Confessions of an Artist by Ramón Margareto will be shown. The documentary on the life of the celebrated artist (also a painter, writer, sculptor and designer) revisits both professional milestones and personal moments, with a sense of humor and honesty that marks his career. Ramón Margareto, who turned sixty in 2022, reflects on the ups and downs of a life lived with artistic intensity. The film is a homage to a versatile creator and to the memories tied to a provincial cinema and its director Bollywood Made in Spain.

On June 7, Irina by Dani Alberola will be presented in the El Corte Inglés Cultural Area. The documentary follows the hardships of Ukrainian war refugees and the changing fortunes of a local fishing community. Guided by Rafael Galvañ, who has collaborated with crews along Alicante’s coast, the film reveals the tools, trades, and livelihoods that were once part of a thriving local industry and are now fading away.

In the event’s program the painted work Days of the Night by Ángel Puado, featuring Tomàs Mestre, is showcased in the same venue. Filmed in the province of Alicante, with significant scenes shot in Castalla and Onil, Days of the Night tells a story of loneliness linked to Alzheimer’s, and the quiet, sometimes painful, memories shared by an elderly couple and their circle of friends.

Reborn closes the invited films cycle on June 8. Presented in the El Corte Inglés Cultural Area, the story follows a Spanish woman living in London who returns to Spain for a friend’s wedding and discovers a new perspective on life, challenging her status and expectations. The project originated as a web series created in El Campello and later evolved into a feature film with broad audience appeal.

Festival organizers describe the lineup as an opportunity to watch feature films by new creators that address current themes and reflect aspects of society and history. The six high-quality titles promise a powerful mix of social insight, documentary craft, and cinematic storytelling that resonates with audiences across Canada and the United States.
