A total of 23 short films from 921 films will compete in the official section of the Alfas del Pi Film Festival, which marks its 34th year from July 2 to July 10. The program covers a wide range of genres, including social drama, comedy, horror, thriller, and fantasy, with running times capped at 20 minutes to fit the festival’s concise storytelling format.

The competition lineup was announced this Wednesday at Casa de Cultura de l’Alfàs by local officials and festival partners. The presentation highlighted a year rich in variety and voices from different backgrounds, underscoring the festival’s commitment to showcasing emerging talent alongside established names in the regional film scene.

Selected shorts include: Person by Álvaro García Moheda; Whore’s Chair by the Navarre Sea; Who by Carlos Martín; Thorns by Iván Sainz-Pardo; Meat by Xabi Victoria; Elsa by Albert Carbo; Your Face by Carlos Moriana and Raúl Cerezo; Study Class! by Pol Diggler; Bernarda’s Rebellion by Jorge Grassr; Parresia by Ignacio Lasierra; Christian by Adam Picardo; Meeting by Fernando Tattoo and Susana Sampedro; To Try by Juan Manuel Montilla; On Your Behalf by Ana García Rico; Trustworthy by Josema Roig; Imaginary by Christian Betta; Table for Three by Álvaro G. Company and Meka Rivera; God Bless You Maria by Julie Estel Soard and Noelia Fluxà; Two-Faced by Josemari Martínez; What Mind Is White by the Mother of Alva; Back Home by Ariadne Shepherd; 7 Doses of Dopamine by Virginia Rodríguez and To Loosen by Xavier Pereira’s Photo.

All these works will contend for the Faro de Plata prize. The festival’s Best National Fiction Short Film category at the Goya Awards will also welcome the winner of this competition, which is one of the national short film sectors with a substantial prize pool, totaling 8,000 euros. The top prize awards 4,000 euros plus Faro de Plata, a second prize of 2,000 euros, and a third prize of 1,000 euros.

There is also a dedicated award this year for Best Valencian Short Film, accompanied by a prize of 500 euros. The selected Valencian shorts include Whore’s Chair from the Navarre Sea; God Bless You Mary by Julie-Estel Soard and Noelia Fluxà; Available by Christian Martinez; It’s Free Outside by Anthony Sendra; Cel Status by Augustine Rubio; Just Two Miles Away by Iskender Devesa; Laya by Ruth Maez; Meeting by Monica Fernandez Menendez.

Additionally, l’Alfàs Film Festival recognizes Best Short Film Directed by Women, in collaboration with Huellas de Mujer and CIMA (Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media). The 500-euro prize this year goes to six female-directed shorts competing in the official section. Selected titles include The Seat of the Bitch, In Your Name, God Save You from Maria, Blanco ne mente, Tornar a casa, and 7 Doses of Dopamine.

Festival jury members responsible for the awards include Cecilia Gesa, an actor, producer and director; Cristina Delgado, a journalist and film critic; Cristina Gallego, an actress; Nuria Cidoncha, a Valencian Community representative for CIMA; and Chechen Leon, director of the festival Octubre en Corto. Another jury, focusing on Best Valencian Short Film, features locals with close ties to the Alicante region, including actresses Cristina Alcázar and Paloma López, along with film critic August Gonzales.

Now in its 33rd edition, the Alfas del Pi Film Festival has long brought together notable actors, directors, producers, technicians, and screenwriters from the national film scene to celebrate cinema in this charming municipality.

Notable participants in previous editions have included Ingrid García-Jonsson, Carlos Santos, Anna Castillo, Pepe Viyuela, Roberto Álamo, Leticia Dolera, Narciso Ibáñez Serrador, Javier Gutiérrez, Carmen Machi, Verónica Forqué, Paco Rabal, Jorge Sanz, Imanol Arias, Maribel Verdú, Verónica Forqué, Pedro Almodóvar, Montxo Armendáriz, Fernando Trueba, José Sacristán, Vicente Aranda, Gracia Querejeta, Luis García Berlanga, Emma Suárez, Eduardo Noriega, Victoria Abril, Julieta Serrano, among others, reflecting the festival’s rich legacy and ongoing appeal to film professionals and fans alike.
