British actor Ian McKellen has confirmed that he based his role on JRR Tolkien’s voice and mannerisms when working on his role as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings. The artist reported this Entertainment Weekly.
“We found a recording of Tolkien reading The Hobbit. Hearing his smoky voice was very helpful. “He was very English and very professional because he was a university teacher,” the actor said.
According to McKellen, he was inspired by reading Tolkien: The author wasn’t very good at acting, but he conveyed his vision of the characters. The actor admitted that he thinks of the author every time he puts on his magician costume.
The Lord of the Rings star also admitted that he wasn’t ready for the publicity Gandalf brought him. The artist was nominated for an Oscar in 2022 for his supporting role in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
“I’m a pretty shy person. But now I can walk into a room of strangers, where there will definitely be at least one person who wants to talk to Gandalf,” said McKellen.
