The project was directed by Roland Emmerich, known for his disaster films “Independence Day,” “The Day After Tomorrow” and “2012,” while the screenwriter was Robert Rodat, who was nominated for an Oscar for his film “Saving Private Ryan.”
The series is based on Daniel Mannix’s novel The Way of the Gladiator. The story follows Emperor Vespasian, played by Anthony Hopkins, as he ascends to the throne after a bloody civil war. In order to calm the people, he decides to offer them not only bread but also a circus. Behind the scenes of gladiator fights and chariot races, intrigue begins to develop.
The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, as well as stars such as Iwan Rheon (from Game of Thrones), Dimitri Leonidas (from Centurion), Lorenzo Riquelmi (from Marco Polo), Tom Hughes (from Madame) and Gabriella Pession (from Lie to Me).
