A copy of the nearly 1600-year-old Gospel of Thomas was found in a library in Hamburg. Telegram channel reports this “Build in Russian” Papyrus expert Dr. from the Institute of Christianity and Antiquity at Humboldt University in Berlin. He quotes Lajos Berkes and his Belgian counterpart.
According to the publication, the papyrus with inventory number 1011 had been lying in the library for a long time, only recently scientists were able to understand what was written on it.
“The piece attracts extraordinary interest from researchers. On the one hand, we were able to date it to the 4th-5th centuries, which makes it the oldest known copy. Secondly, we were able to obtain new information about the transmission of the text,” shared the scientists.
Until now, the first Greek text version of the Gospel of Thomas was believed to be wax-covered wooden tablets from the 11th century. They were combined into a kind of notebook.
