Beatles vocalist and frontman John Lennon’s guitar sold at auction for $2.85 million after being stored in his attic for 50 years, the auction house reported. Julien’s Auctions.
The acoustic guitar by Framus Hootenanny was produced in 1964 and featured the “Help!” In honor of the Beatles song. This guitar sings The Beatles’ “Help!” It was used during the recording of the album. and Rubber Soul. The instrument was used by John Lennon as well as The Beatles’ lead guitarist George Harrison in recording the songs “You’ve Got Hide Your Love Away” and “Norwegian Wood”.
In late 1965, John Lennon gave the guitar to Gordon Waller of the Peter & Gordon record label, who then gave the guitar to his manager, who put the guitar in his attic for 50 years.
An anonymous buyer purchased the item from the Hard Rock Cafe in New York. Upon purchase, the instrument became one of the five most expensive guitars in history. Auction officials said that by purchasing it, the new owner became “the custodian of a piece of Lennon’s soul, a tangible link to the creative energy that flowed through him and touched the lives of millions.”
