Stage director Anna Babanova, who prepared the play “Being Smoktunovsky”, said that she discovered interesting details about the Soviet artist while examining previously closed archives. His words were quoted kp.ru.

“There is an entry in your profile that surprises me. The director, Innokenty Mikhailovich, signed that he was in the service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR: “undertakes to keep this in the strictest secrecy, not to disclose all the circumstances known to me…”, the director admitted.

Babanova later explained that the Norilsk Theater was part of the Gulag system, so its employees were automatically included in the service of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs. She also discovered that while Smoktunovsky was working in Norilsk, he stated in the questionnaire that he did not change his surname and that he was not a prisoner of war. She believes that the artist wanted to “make a different biography for himself.”

According to Babanova, Smoktunovsky decided to go to Norilsk on the advice of theater figure Alexander Duchman, who also suggested that the artist change his surname. The director later said that the actor changed the ending of the film: he switched from Smoktunovich to Smoktunovsky.
