Irma Farelo i Solé is a rare work for many reasons. One of these is carrying the success of an exciting career of just one year with extraordinary self-confidence. Yes, only one year, but many coconuts need much less than 365 days to become cloudy. Because the life of this 19-year-old young Catalan woman art Mushkaa, whom I was with a year ago.
Far from a novice, he performed in the Sidecar room on January 20, 2023 – making his last night as we know it so far this Wednesday – and a few months later he abandoned his studies at Taller de Músics. and a complementary job as a pioneer in a theater in Barcelona to start his artistic career with a certain giddiness, because although there is already water in the pool (a handful of successful songs rooted in urban music), you never know from the outside how much is enough to make the jump without leaving a vertebra in the fall? “I didn’t want to remain a ‘nini’,” Mushkaa admits in an interview with this newspaper.
Perhaps this did not happen because he buried his feet in the sand of Vilassar de Mar beach. For now, he continues to live with his family – his own family, who clearly have a stage background – and spend time with friends who have nothing to do with music. “This is my comfort zone, where I can be like Irma, talk about non-Mushkaa things, or be the center of attention. Simply talk. How are you? How was college for you?”
As you can see, this interview sensational second ‘mixtape’ ‘SexySensible’ released, a very short time travel where the calendar burns the pages at a devilish speed. And you must know how to fool the devil. “I enjoyed it, but not as much as I expected. Now I’m starting to do more. Everything happened so fast, and that means you can’t put things in perspective, the good things that happen to you. You normalize some things that are not normal,” he says. Mushkaa had to quickly shape his project at the beginning of 2023 due to the anticipation and attention it generated in the music industry.
For example, he performed to go on a summer tour that seemed a bit long, although he enjoyed it. Maybe because he’s trying to please the public rather than himself. “There was a point in my tour when I felt that yes, I wanted to compose, not give concerts. There I realized that I was doing what people wanted, not what I wanted. Not on a media level, not musically. But thanks to the album, I had the opportunity to be in the studio a lot and compose.” And ‘SexySensible’ came (thanks to its producer Roots and their close collaboration with twin sister Greta, ‘Señal de sayg’ or colleague Akilon, ‘Turra malvada’) is an independently published work combining Catalan and Spanish. It shows its two faces: vervain, boiling, young and sticky; and the introverted, calm, and completely surprising one. By the way, the faces represented by two candy horses on the album cover.
Two faces
From the first, ‘Xarnega’ sums up the ‘sexy’ part of her figure very well, a Catalan with interventions and the courage of being a young woman revealing her desire for another woman.. “If it helps girls, all the better. But I don’t want to give myself the medal that I did it on purpose. I’m privileged because of my environment, but it’s great to claim it naturally. I think it’s the coolest way for society to change things. I don’t feel like a role model, though.” If it helps someone, that’s perfect.” Also on this ‘sexy’ side, there is a mystery song called ‘SexeSexy’, which is included in the album and has not been released yet. Mushkaa doesn’t want to shed any light on the mystery, but does so with a smile: “The sexiest song on the album, a ‘single’ for later, because good things take a long time to come.”
Listen to the monumental ‘The Disguise’ from the ‘sensitive’ section, which responds to a personal episode that is a little more hidden and is further revealed through this work, for example. “As an artist, I felt like I had to prove something, and maybe people want a change too. We all really like to party and stuff like that, but it’s also nice to be able to wear something when we come home and we’re alone in the room… ..I wish that too.” I wanted to bring it.”
Apollo square
Another explosive combination in the middle of this dizzying year. One day in July, he started selling tickets for an Apolo concert in Barcelona. Everything sold out within an hour and a half. The next day, the second concert of the same brand goes on sale. “I don’t want to be afraid, I’m very excited and I know that when I go crazy, everything will go wrong. For me, the Apollo thing is a movie, I don’t even see it as real. I’m not ready for concerts, when I see it or go to it, I cry or I don’t know. I did a Sidecar a year ago and it was the concert of my life ” he explains.
He adds: “There is a dizziness of saying, ‘There are so many people who like what I do, let’s do it well.’ I’m trying to keep my feet on the ground because everything is so temporary that maybe I’ll win.” I’ll never be able to sell products again.” “Basket. Maybe.” For now, the galloping horse will pass through Apolo in an expanded and ambitious show with dancers and musicians on stage – yes, suitable for purists.
