General Director of Mosfilm Cinema Concern, People’s Artist of Russia Karen Shakhnazarov, stated that the success of Russian cinema is an illusion and noted that such an illusion can only harm the development of cinema. The director’s words are quoted TASS.
“I don’t see much success in Russian cinema anymore. I think a very good opportunity has arisen for Russian cinema. “For this reason, although foreign producers are entering the market quite actively, the market is really closed.”
He admitted that domestic cinema needs to produce more films for the market to be successful. According to Shakhnazarov, about 120 films are currently shot in Russia per year, but it is not possible to saturate the market with so many products. The director stated that only one in four films created would survive distribution, so production had to be increased.
“If you make 300 films a year, that means at least 60 films can be released in theaters. It’s already filling theaters. <…> Some also think the pictures should be done better. This does not happen,” Shahnazarov emphasized.
Before that Shahnazarov statedIn order to increase audience interest in state films, ticket prices need to be reduced.
