The first group of restorers from Russia arrived in Abkhazia to work on paintings that survived the fire in the Central Exhibition Hall (CEH). This was reported by TASS With reference to the press service of the Ministry of Culture of Abkhazia.
“The delegation is headed by Natalia Chechel, Deputy Director of the Department of Museums and Foreign Relations. The delegation included heads of restoration departments and restoration experts from the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum and the Center bearing his name. Grabar and GosNIIR,” the message says.
Russian experts will assess the condition of paintings and documents that survived the fire at the National Gallery of Art and outline restoration plans.
According to the statement made by the Ministry of Culture of Abkhazia, gallery employees took inventory of the surviving works and moved them from the accessory store of the Abkhaz Drama Theater, where the works were placed after the fire, to the National Library building. In total, about 150 paintings by Viktor Shcheglov, Khuta Avidzba, Sergei Sangalov, Sergei Gablia, Vissarion Tsvizhba and Varvara Bubnova were saved.
In total, the gallery’s collection included approximately 4 thousand works by various artists; All 228 paintings by the first professional Abkhazian artist Alexander Chachba-Shervashidze were completely lost.
