A monument to People’s Artist of Russia Yuri Lyubimov, the founder and former artistic director of the Taganka Theater, will be erected near the theater building. This was reported by TASS Referring to Irina Apeksimova, director of the Taganka Theater.

The monument will be exhibited at the cultural institution on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Taganka Theater.

“We are very pleased that the memory of its founder has been immortalized: in honor of the anniversary, a monument to Yuri Lyubimov will be erected at the main entrance. “People like him undoubtedly deserve the highest recognition, so that others remember their contribution to art throughout their lives,” said Apeksimova, adding that the monument to Lyubimov, in her opinion, should have appeared here a long time ago.

The monument may be opened in the fall; Sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov, People’s Artist of Russia, is working on the statue. The initiators of the installation were Yuri Lyubimov’s widow Katalina Lyubimova and Moscow and St. They were the heads of some theaters in St. Petersburg.

Moscow Taganka Drama and Comedy Theater was founded on April 23, 1964 by graduates of the Boris Shchukin Theater School. Their graduation performance “The Good Man from Szechwan” was staged by Yuri Lyubimov, who was the chief director of the theatre. Vladimir Vysotsky, Valery Zolotukhin, Alla Demidova, Leonid Filatov, Ivan Bortnik and others played in the theater. In 1989, a split occurred in the group, and the breakaway part founded the “Taganka Actors’ Ensemble”.

In 2014, Lyubimov passed away, and in 2021 the Taganka Theater and the “Taganka Actors Ensemble” will perform again become a theatre.
