Belarusian writer and journalist Sasha Filipenko reported that a performance based on his novel “Cremulator” in Moscow has been cancelled. He talked about this in an interview with the YouTube project Living Nail.

According to Filipenko, the premiere was supposed to take place in January at the Moscow Pokrovka Theater. The director of the production, Anastasia Pautova, was, according to her, summoned to the theater management and offered to “take something else or put the Cremulator in a fairy tale,” and the actor who played the investigator Perepelitsa was allegedly “subpoenaed.”

Filipenko suggested that the reason for the cancellation might be the content of the production.

The published novel “Cremulator” is based on materials from the case of Pyotr Nesterenko, the first director of the Moscow crematorium, who worked during the years of Stalin’s repression. According to Filipenko, the costumes and props were already ready and rehearsals for the performance were ongoing.
