Urtasun informed the audiovisual sector that it will reintroduce the Cinema Law

HE Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, He held three meetings with representatives of the main manufacturers, distributors and exhibitor associations in the audiovisual industry and provided the following information to existing agencies: The Cinema Law, which was paralyzed in the previous parliament, will be revived. As several representatives of the participants explained to Europa Press.

Fernando Victoria de Lecea, President of the International Association of Audiovisual Production Companies (Profilm), claimed that the minister stated at the meeting that he would continue the Film Law by reviewing it “on the current basis”.

“This was the first contact in which he told us that his idea was to continue the last submission on the law to Congress, review the law and act in turn with the cultural commissions of the Congress and proceed on the basis that already exists …”, he revealed.

This Film Code is awaited by various sectors of cinema, especially independent producers, seeing how it has been approved. General Law of Audiovisual Communication This included a “new definition of independent producer” which they did not agree with; this included the understanding that more power was given to network production companies.

Victoria de Lecea sees the existence of two different definitions in both laws as compatible and believes that there should be no conflict since “these are two norms coming from different fields”.

Another person who attended the meeting with Urtasun was Koldo Zuazua, president of the Independent Audiovisual Producers Federation (PIAF), who praised the “spirit” and “dialogue” Urtasun showed; this was “not a very common situation for the producers” with “other ministers”, especially in a “very urgent” way.

Before emphasizing that they left the meeting with a “very positive” feeling, he said, “He said he would listen to us, and now it is his turn to listen to other segments of the industry.”

Although the participants grouped in FECE did not consider the meeting with Urtasun as a “first contact”, this association had already conveyed some of its demands on this issue before the Cinema Law came into force. For this reason, Cinemas advocate abolishing exhibition quotas in Europe or creating 100-day exclusivity in new movie theaters moviesThere are currently 45 days.
