The management of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (SHMF) has suspended the participation of its founder, conductor and pianist Justus Franz, in the event. This was reported by TASS referring to German media.
In June, the German musician joined the jury of the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and the festival management considered ties with Russia unacceptable.
“We are discussing the founder’s actions with him personally, not publicly. For many reasons it was impossible to invite Justus Franz. Festival director Christian Kunt explains his decision as follows: “One of these is their activities in Russia.
Franz disputed the fairness of his suspension, calling it “cowardly”. He also stated that he “will not kneel” to be invited.
Franz founded the festival in Schleswig-Holstein in 1986.
