The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled to pay compensation of over 24 thousand euros in favor of the punk band Pussy Riot, which objected to the registration ban of a non-profit organization (NPO). writes about this RIA News.
Since last year, Russia no longer recognizes the Strasbourg court’s jurisdiction.
After the band members were released from prison in 2013, where they were serving sentences for hooliganism, they expressed their intention to create a project called “Legal Zone” that would provide legal assistance to prisoners. But they were rejected with the explanation that the documents submitted when registering NPOs and the state of the organization did not meet the requirements. They applied to the ECHR on this issue.
The court concluded that there were not sufficiently clear instructions and formal requirements for registering an NPO and completing the relevant documentation. As stated on the official website of the court, these inaccuracies in the documents cannot constitute a reason for rejection of registration.
