State Duma deputies of the Education Committee told socialbites.ca which books they like to read from the compulsory school curriculum at a young age. The first deputy chairman of the committee, Yana Lantratova, admitted that she preferred classical Russian literature at school and switched to foreign writers at the institute.

“I loved reading and reading. And Russian classical literature and foreign classical literature. There are books that cannot leave anyone indifferent. Almost everyone is talking about The Master and Margarita. I liked Mikhail Lermontov’s A Hero of Our Time and Leo Tolstoy’s early stories such as Father Sergius. Of course, Alexander Pushkin chose the works of Alexander Griboyedov “Eugene Onegin”, “The Captain’s Daughter” and “Woe from Wit”. From abroad, this was already at the university, I was reading Salinger’s book “The Catcher in the Rye”. While reading, I always lost myself in the book, empathized with the characters, and was interested in different images and characters. I also studied authors’ biographies to understand why they wrote about this topic and how these books connected to their personal experiences. Thanks to books, I developed creative thinking and developed a good style,” said Lantratova.

Deputy Anatoly Wasserman, in a conversation with socialbites.ca, said that he loves the works of Alexander Pushkin and even reads those that are not included in the school curriculum. The politician also admitted that he did not like Leo Tolstoy’s book “War and Peace” because it had “a lot of letters” in it.

“I liked almost the entire school curriculum, except War and Peace.” Now, as they say, there are too many letters. So I read it, and I read it with interest. Almost everything I know in French I know from War and Peace. But above all, it took a lot of effort to read. Secondly, the philosophy of historical fatalism proposed by Tolstoy, in which everything moves naturally and people cannot influence it in any way – even then I did not like it. Personally, I start from the fact that there are always several options for the course of events. How different they are is a matter of luck, but people can always choose between these options. So what did I like most? Pushkin, Mayakovsky. They liked almost everything I read. By the way, I read everything that is published, not just what is directly provided in the school curriculum,” Wasserman said.

Mikhail Berulava, first deputy chairman of the education committee, told socialbites.ca that during his studies at school he was taught Russian literature and the Russian language for two hours a week. Berulava also noted that he really likes to read Russian classics and wants to have the same qualities as the heroes of the poems.

“I graduated from Georgian high school. Russian language and literature were taught by a fascinating, wonderful teacher. It made everything interesting and increased our motivation to study. We loved Lermontov, Mayakovsky and Pushkin very much. The Russian language is a rich, very interesting language of people like Pushkin, Lermontov, Griboyedov. I would like to be as brave, kind and sympathetic as the heroes of poetry and the heroes of literature in general. “I am very grateful to the teachers,” said Berulava.
