American film director Martin Scorsese has called on filmmakers to rid cinema of entertainment content. This is what he’s talking about aforementioned We’re talking to GQ.
According to him, the film industry in which he started his career 50 years ago no longer exists, and studios are not interested in allocating big budgets to interesting, personal ideas.
Scorsese is certain that movie franchises and comic book adaptations have a negative impact on culture. He compared such images to the work of artificial intelligence (AI).
“Managers themselves need to get to work. There’s the Safdie brothers, there’s Chris Nolan, you know? You need to push in every way and not give up. Insist. Reinvent. Don’t complain. But we really need to save cinema,” he said.
The 80-year-old author of Taxi Driver and Goodfellas also admitted that popular cinema employs good directors and special effects artists.
“So what do these movies mean? What do they give you? Other than consuming something and getting rid of it?” He asked.
