Actress Kerry Washington says star of ‘Ray’ and ‘Scandal’ New York TimesHe learned about his origins to coincide with the publication of his upcoming memoir, Thicker Than Water.
In the book, the artist shares her educational and creative journey, as well as more complex topics such as mental illnesses – depression, eating disorders and insomnia. Washington also discovered that his father was not his biological parent.
After starring for seven seasons on ABC’s hit series Scandal, Washington delved into her past on the PBS show Finding Your Roots, hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr. Washington told the New York Times that her mother and father were visibly hesitant when she went to collect DNA samples for the demonstration.
Gates went to talk privately with his parents (professor Valerie and real estate agent Earl). That’s when they asked if there was a chance the test would “reveal” that Washington had no biological children. In response, Gates suggested they talk to their daughter about her origins while she was still alive.
“My father and I always had the odd disagreement, but I thought it was my fault. I thought I wasn’t a kind enough person. But the thought that I didn’t belong to him never occurred to me. Why can’t I be nicer to him? Why can’t we be closer? What is wrong with me? What’s our problem? — the actor wondered until the truth was revealed.
Washington, an Emmy Award winner, said she felt mixed emotions of liberation and excitement when she learned the truth. But there was also a sense of guilt and anger.
