The Russian State Academic Bolshoi Theater (GABT) will present the King opera by Italian composer Umberto Giordano for the first time. The premiere of the performance is scheduled for Thursday at the Chamber Stage named after BA Pokrovsky, writes. TASS.
“The Bolshoi Theater continues its tradition of staging little-known and rarely performed works. This explains the interest in Umberto Giordano’s opera The King, which was never staged at the Bolshoi.”
Historical sources say that Umberto Giordano’s last opera, The King, had its world premiere at La Scala in Milan on January 12, 1929. It was written specifically for Italian singer Toti dal Monte. She successfully played the main role of Rosaline several times, but after leaving the stage lost interest in this opera.
“Umberto Giordano is practically a new name for the Bolshoi Theatre. Until 1897, the composer’s most famous opera, André Chénier, was presented on the Bolshoi stage by the Italian troupe of the Imperial Theaters Directorate. The “King” opera will essentially become a discovery for the modern audience,” said the Bolshoi Theater press service.
The plot of the opera is about Rosalina, the beautiful daughter of a miller, who changes her mind to marry Colombello, who has fallen in love with her. The girl, who meets the king by chance in the forest, wants to be happy and rich. Now his thoughts are not with the rootless Colombello, but with the king. The king orders Rosaline to be brought to her room. But when she sees the king without make-up and luxurious clothes, the girl is horrified. She remembers Colombello longingly, realizing she doesn’t need anyone else. The king promises her a magnificent wedding with her lover and asks her to keep her secret.
Conductor Anton Grishanin, stage director Yury Muravitsky, stage designer Pyotr Okunev, lighting designer Evgeny Podezdnikov and others worked on the performance at the Bolshoi Theatre.
