“Comedy escapes logic, measure and math”

With more than 80 films in his balance as an actor, Karra Elejalde (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1960) proclaims himself an advocate of short films and festivals that portray them as a showcase for the new filmmakers with whom he continues to work. With two films waiting to be released -Kepler Sixth Bby Alejandro Suárez and the sound of the sunElejalde, a series by Carol Polakof- to be shot this summer, received the Alicante Film Festival Honor Award this Saturday.

Is it exciting to receive an award at this point?

What you are doing is not believing that you truly deserve it. The awards cannot be understood as the fair value of the work you do and it is a little scary because honor awards are never given to twenty year olds. But they ask you and you say let’s do something for festivals because Alicante festival is about long and short festivals and I am a great advocate of short festivals. If I have the time and they offer it and I like the script, I usually do it, and I mean it sincerely because I think that’s the only quarry we have to create in the movie world with schools and festivals. Before working with them, I watched many short films like Bajo Ulloa written by Julio Medem or Nacho Vigalondo, and then acted in the first films of these guys who are today’s established directors. For these people, the short film gave them the opportunity to introduce themselves, the breeding ground for new talent, and so for me, going to the festival is an act of militancy and I let them see how important they are. I feel very proud and my existence is an act of militancy and gratitude.

He takes it along with Alejandro Amenábar and Nathalie Poza. Does this just sound like more?

These are things that also contribute to wanting more, because if I’m going to be with Alejandro, who adores him, and Nathalie Poza, who worked together on the same film –As long as the war goes onWell, for more reasons.

What memories do you have of that movie and the character you played as Unamuno?

It was a very tough movie, with hours of make-up on, which meant a total of eleven hours of filming. I had found the right time when I had just finished shooting to sleep, shower and work something. If we’re shooting at 8 o’clock, I’ve been there since 4 in the morning with makeup on. And also, due to his back movement, the character was degenerating and feeling very low on his back, although he did not change his age. The job was to put on makeup that flattered her ass and then bend over to be an older character than me and try to look like her. The actor is never alone: it will turn out well if it is well lit and good if it is well managed. For better or worse, the actor does not do his work alone, he is always accompanied and covered.

You have to be reliable as well.

It’ll be because I’m a liar (laughs), I guess I lied a lot as a kid and it’s stuck with me. Ultimately, an actor’s job is to deceive you and show you that something is not there, and I think I’m good at it, so question everything I tell you (laughs).

The public has perhaps seen him more in comedy. Do you like it more than drama?

If I count, I don’t think I’ve done more comedy than drama, but I’ve worked in movies like: Eight Basque surnames, Airbag, Marian Yearhas been seen by many. But I think I’ve done as many or more as I haven’t. If I start writing for me, I always get comedy because I get along better, I’m more solvent, and I believe comedy should be treated with the same rigor as drama. Comedy is much more difficult as it has no honors, no math. Cinema has thousands of sources to get people excited or cry, it even gives you menthol in your eyes, but comedy escapes logic, measure, and math. You tell a joke and even if you tell it like you always do, it will magically work today and not tomorrow. There’s always something that escapes us, you gotta be lucky, find it tempo right… I believe it would be better if the player could be more complete, and I’ve always tried to function in different directions.

You took part in the beginnings of great directors such as Álex de la Iglesia, Juanma Bajo Ulloa, Julio Medem… How do you see them now?

I was lucky to be a fetish player for new directors. I made the first one by Álex de la Iglesia, almost all from Bajo Ulloa, Nacho Vigalondo, Balagueró, Calparsoro, Medem… a lot. I’ve made more than twenty first films by all these people, I’ve been lucky and had a chance to see how short filmmakers become great directors. That’s why I believe that festivals and schools are the source of these great directors. Now I don’t see most of them (laughs), although I was with Álex de la Iglesia the other day, but each one develops in different ways, but they are all blessed, although no one doubts their enormous solvency.

The most important thing in your career: two Goya awards, the tsunami of the world. Eight Basque surnamesdirectors you work with?

I’ve always been too get ahead. Like everyone else, I have my doubts, but I took a lot of risk and God bless. It was a good choice not to stay away, to try to diversify and to heal some things from others. There are players who feel comfortable and solvent in a lane, and I have to experiment to find out what I am and what I am not. My hand didn’t tremble if someone offered me something, you don’t know how panicked it was when Alejandro offered you the role of Unamuno and he’d get dizzy too. what we call spare-gusti. Another says that I cannot see myself, but that I should try to see myself in everything, even if I am right. I’ve also seen Robert de Niro play many small roles. I tried to get some roles to better me from others. And when I say “cure,” it’s not because I’m infected, it’s just because if I do what’s comfortable for me, they’ll call me for it. I also had turning points: Bajo Ulloa offered me the first hero and I had the chance to choose all of Spain; What gives rise to the trilogy of “altered states of consciousness”, Airbag, Marian Year Andtherapy; Eight Basque surnames It was undoubtedly another turning point. I’ve been lucky enough to work with great directors, colleagues, and technicians, and what I do is keep learning every day because it’s a profession you just don’t know about. I like to see what they offer me is a challenge.

Inside Kepler Sixth B gives life to a senile old man, to another father life… Are you starting to worry?

The exact opposite. The role I want to play is Don Quixote de la Mancha. Dolphin caps A man with Diogenes syndrome who clicks and creates a parallel universe has nothing to do with the other. father life. But Jonás has something to do with that Quixote, I think we did a space Quixote.

I don’t know if you want to evaluate the last elections. Moviegoers are always asked about the political situation, as if they had an answer for everything. Does this bother you?

I have my own way of thinking and political ideology, but I will not make any evaluations about the elections. You never ask a football player or a bullfighter and I don’t know why players ask, I guess it’s sickening to know what style or ideological you are. I’m not afraid to say I’m a man who feels progressive in understanding social coexistence, but I’m not here to analyze how they turned out. It is the result of the will of the people, that is, the desire of the politicians to put the batteries.
