Writer and playwright Antonio Gala died in Córdoba on 28 May at the age of 92. This was reported to the Spanish news agency EFE by sources close to the family. A message about the tragedy was also published on the official Twitter page of the Spanish Ministry of Culture:
“We are saddened by the death of author Antonio Gala, winner of the Fine Arts Gold Medal of Merit.”
The author was born on October 2, 1930 in Brasatortas. He began writing novels in the 1990s, when he became known as the screenwriter of the movie Let Them Talk and as a political figure. In 1981, Gala became president of the Spanish-Arab Friendship Association and joined the Spanish-USSR Friendship Association. He was also the head of a civilian platform opposing Spain’s permanent membership in NATO.
Gala’s first novel, The Red Manuscript, won the Premio Planeta in 1990. In 2011, the Spanish Writers Association awarded the author a Lifetime Honorary Don Quixote Award.
