What unites you with your colleague David Krahe, with whom you shared a concert in Alaró next Friday?
David and I understand each other so well, you don’t even have to look at each other and it’s either there or not. It’s not that I admire him as a virtuoso, although so far he has been almost like that. I’ve known him since he was little and we played solo, recorded together, played cover concerts… He’s my best friend, a born worker, what more could I ask for. And now in Los Enemigos.
Their songs don’t expire. In the ’90s you were already talking about sexist violence (“Blood, sweat and strawberry gum”) and religious fanaticism.
Religious fanaticism and sexist violence accompany humanity for a lifetime, unchanging, touching themes, perhaps this is what makes these songs immortal.
“Songs that touch the heart are immortal.” Can the closing moment of a song be eternal?
I think a song is over, I’m probably wrong, that’s what I’m trying to do when a chord starts playing in my heart or just my imagination gets a little excited, so I use There are so many cinematographic images that I think of the lyrics a bit like a photograph and choose the framing rather than choosing the subject. I love to draw. Since we are all made of the same material, it is reasonable to assume that this song will reach a few more people.
Earlier this week, the exhumation of Primo de Rivera did not stop. What do you think about that?
I’m not very aware, so I prefer to keep quiet, not because I don’t want to get wet, my opinion and position on burning issues are quite clear, but I prefer not to talk about things I don’t know’ I don’t know I’ve been away from today for over a month. I’ve been traveling a lot lately and writing songs.
Does music help you better endure these hostile times we live in?
Yes, that’s what music is made for. It was always like that when I remember it, dark and hostile. Music also helps us not to forget, forgetting is very dangerous.
What do you expect from the upcoming elections?
Obviously the right did not win, did not have an absolute majority. With this, I find myself with one edge in my teeth and the other with the inner split of the left, well, we’ll see how it turns out. What I always expect from an election is that the right does not win. Because? Because I don’t like their methods, origins and so-called principles.
Did you leave your native Madrid to escape this?
No, it has nothing to do with it. After I became a blonde I left Madrid and came here (on the outskirts of Barcelona) and I am still here. I still go to Madrid quite often, almost every month, to keep an eye on my mother.
Are big cities unattractive to you?
I don’t live in the countryside, but there is already Serralada de Marina within a five-minute walk.
How did you celebrate Sant Jordi while living in Barcelona?
I celebrated in the afternoon because morning caught me traveling. I bought a rose for my wife, and I came upon a book that promises lots of fun and lots of laughter: an autobiography by Mel Brooks (All About Me!).
How do you balance between Los Enemigos and the concerts presented in 2022?
It was a very busy and fun year because we were diving into our discography, giving very special concerts, adding new songs to the repertoire, it’s a very interesting exercise. Let’s see if we can record when the summer is over.
Have some of your songs already been shot?
Never shot, sketchy at best. Each song chooses to turn on the spark where you least expect it. The important thing is to never disconnect the antenna and always be alert, take notes and all that, always be careful. Like who hunts butterflies, I hunt songs.
Maybe a young rocker will read this interview. What do you miss in emerging rock?
I would have told you these interesting words a short time ago, but right now there are many interesting groups, I declare myself an unconditional supporter of Xarim Aresté, but what I think young people miss is a little more infrastructure. It’s hard to get the word out about the work you do.
