The State Tretyakov Gallery plans to present an exhibition of icons “Life and Miracle” on April 19. In this respect informs agency “Moscow”, with reference to the press service of the institution.

The exhibition will feature XIV-XIX centuries from a private collection. “A significant part of the exhibition consisted of hagiographic paintings of Christian saints, that is, icons depicting the events in his life and the miracles that he performed, in addition to the saint himself,” the press service said.

The exhibition will particularly feature paintings by the Prophet Elijah, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Great Martyrs George, Demetrius and Nikita, Martyrs Paraskeva, Barbara and Anastasia. “The exhibition also includes extremely rare paintings by St. Tikhon of Amaphunte, the famous Byzantine hymn writer St. Joseph the Songwriter, the martyrs Victor and Boniface, and others.”

In a separate section of the exhibition, lists of miraculous icons of the Mother of God will be supplemented with stories from the legends about these icons, a genre common in Russian culture of the late Middle Ages and modern times.
