Professor James Hall suggested that Van Gogh’s Starry Night painting was inspired by the Eiffel Tower. writes about it Guard.

According to him, the artist began painting in June 1889, shortly after the official Paris monument was presented to the public as the main attraction of the World Exhibition. Its opening was accompanied by a nightly demonstration of pyrotechnics, which Hall believed was what the painting depicted.

“For Van Gogh, the cypress tree is a natural alternative to the Eiffel Tower,” the art critic added. “The Starry Night is nature’s and history’s answer to Eiffel’s metal monster trying to outlast the Egyptians. Just as the Eiffel Tower dominates Paris, the obelisk cypress dominates Saint-Remy and the church tower.
