Jürgen Schadeberg (Berlin, 1931-Valencia, 2020) grew up during the Nazi regime and moved to South Africa after World War II. He was one of the few white photographers to photograph everyday life among the black community by filming the beginnings of the freedom movement and the effects of apartheid. It reflected historical and important events from the 1950s, such as the 1952 Defiance Campaign, the 1956 Treason Trial, or the Sophiatown social scene. He was also able to portray important figures of that time. Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Govan Mbeki and documented the jazz legends of the 1950s as follows: Thandi Klaasen, Hugh Masekela, Kippie Moeketsi and Miriam Makeba. Since 2013 he lived in Valencia, La Drova until his death in 2020.

PhotoAlicante shows a selection of photographs taken by the German photographer’s widow, who is the curator. Claudia Schadeberg, in collaboration with Leica Camera Iberia. under the title kind eye, The photographs reflect the author’s empathetic, humanistic and humorous outlook.
