Russian pianist Denis Matsuev in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta saidAs in the 1990s, he has performed in 45 countries around the world with the New Names Foundation.
According to Matsuev, he played at the UN General Assembly, at UNESCO, at NATO headquarters in Brussels, with the Queen of England, with the Pope at the Vatican. “Now it is impossible to imagine that Russian children would come to NATO headquarters and live in families and that then NATO Secretary General Manfred Werner would give us a standing ovation! Thereupon, Brussels newspapers said, “The Russians have conquered NATO!” wrote Werner, “We are not against such a conquest!” – remembered the musician.
Matsuev spoke with journalists on the eve of the opening of the first International Youth Piano Competition named after SV. Rachmaninov on March 21 in Veliky Novgorod. Fifteen young contestants in the regional philharmonic ensemble will perform in two rounds.
