The Execution, Sundance horror movie, Everything Everywhere and At Once and its April 6 premiere

“Rattle” (“Pahanhautoja”) – from April 7

12-year-old gymnast Tinya works with all her might to please her strict mother and realize herself in sports. In turn, the girl’s mother, a popular video blogger, does her best to maintain the status of an exemplary family with an ideal house as in a catalogue. One day, Tinya finds a bird’s egg in the forest and secretly brings it home. From this moment, the cardboard family idyll begins to crumble rapidly.

Gnash is a Scandinavian body-horror film that reached Russian screens directly from the Sundance 2022 independent film festival, where it was among the top ten films. The worldwide success of Julie Ducournot’s “Titan” testifies to the fact that body fear is now particularly valuable. Hannah Bergholm’s painting partially abandons the anatomical provocation of her French counterpart – the monster here depicts an eccentric animate creature in the spirit of “Alien”. Western critics have already called “Rattle” something between “American Beauty” and paintings by Yorgos Lanthimos.

“Harry Haft: The Last Stand” (“The Survivor”) – April 7

The biopic follows the great boxer Harry Haft (Ben Foster), who is forced to fight to the death by the Germans during WWII. And although the horrors of the concentration camp and torture are in the past, his memories continue to follow the athlete. In peacetime, Haft prepares to enter the ring against the invincible Rocky Marciano, while the protagonist’s duel is only an accompanying background, and his main goal is to find his lost love.

Until recently, 79-year-old director Barry Levinson seemed to be preparing to retire and making way for his own son, Sam (the creator of Euphoria), but there was no such luck. The director, who raised the industry with the Breakout mini-series about the biggest drug scandal in the USA in 2021, has now signed a true story from the distant past. Despite his venerable age, Levinson still relies on the director’s chair and does not intend to slow down – now he is busy with seven projects at once. Harry Haft: The Last Stand is an uplifting story about social and personal challenges that reminds you of the importance of being able to fight for what matters to you.

“Everything Everywhere At Once” – April 7

The story is built on different variations of an alternate reality where you are not the same but are the best version of yourself. The main character of the movie, Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh), learns of the existence of an alternate world, suddenly gaining the memories, emotions, and superpowers of other versions of herself. Now Evelyn can live thousands of lives and be anything from a famous actress and martial artist to an opera singer and one of the forms of a god. But great power also means great responsibility – Evelyn will have to battle a mysterious dark entity that threatens the multiverse.

Initially, the film’s writers Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Swiss Army Knife Man”) cast Jackie Chan for the main role, but as a result, the character became a woman and Michelle Yeoh took the job. Incredible acrobatic things the actress can do – we saw in the last Marvel project Shang-Chi and the sequel to The Legend of the Ten Rings and Guardians of the Galaxy.

In fact, “Everything is Everywhere” is a gripping fantasy action movie in the spirit of “The Matrix”, rethought by the author in the style of Kwan and Scheinert. This time they got production support from Joe and Anthony Russo, the creators of The Avengers.

“Sunset” – April 14

A wealthy couple (Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg) enjoy a luxurious stay in luxury suites in Acapulco. It would seem that nothing should spoil their well-planned journey, but a sudden event confuses the spouses’ plans, highlighting the emerging rift in their family life and within themselves.

Film director Michel Franco won the Venice Film Festival’s Grand Prix last year for the social drama The New Order, which lost the support of not only the heroes but the familiar world of society as a whole. This time the director goes from the general to the specific – narrowing the space for dramatic maneuvers with a married couple who realize that instead of the beach, Acapulco ends up in a dreary jungle.

“Execution” – from April 21

In the already closed serial murder case, which has been investigated for almost 10 years, a new case arises – the surviving victim of a maniac. For particularly important cases, investigator Issa Davydov (Niko Tavadze) continues the investigation – for the hero, this is an important chance for salvation, because he had previously succumbed to pressure and turned a blind eye to a lack of evidence. Now Issa must correct the mistake and do everything possible to get the maniac to confess to the murders.

“Execution” is Lado Kvatania’s long-awaited debut feature. The director rose to fame thanks to clips shot for many outstanding artists, from Husky and Oksimiron to works for muse (and bride) singer Manizha. “Execution” is not only a test in the full-length format of Kvatania’s pen, but also an important creative challenge accepted by the director: This can be seen both in the courage of the chosen theme and in the strong cast (Yulia Snigir, Evgeny Tkachuk, Victoria Tolstoganova), a Working as a socialite is not easy.

“Tear and throw” – from April 21

At the end of her prison sentence, Olya (Victoria Korotkova) tries to start her life over and goes to pick up her ten-year-old daughter from her grandmother, the despot Vera Pavlovna (Anna Mikhalkova). But the latter will not give a grandchild – and around the unfortunate child a serious conflict is brewing, not only between two women, but between two generations. As a result, the conflict between father, child and grandchildren in the same family turns into an adventurous chase. The heroes add new members to their adventures, and things get out of hand when they decide to continue the verbal fight with weapons.

“Tear and Throw” is the second feature film directed by Kirill Sokolov, who is remembered for his bold and classy debut, “Daddy Die”.

“Stalker” / “Rerberg and Tarkovsky: The reverse of “Stalker” – from April 4

In honor of the 90th anniversary of Andrei Tarkovsky’s birth, there will be Stalker, in which the director explores the essence of life, and Rerberg and Tarkovsky: The Other Side of the Stalker, a film that explores Tarkovsky himself. displayed on the big screen.

If the cult film adaptation of the works of the Strugatsky brothers does not need special introduction, I would like to separately mention the documentary film by Igor Maiboroda. The tape explores the well-known conflict between two masters: director Tarkovsky and his colleague cameraman Rerberg. During the filming of Stalker, the producers managed to navigate a difficult path from collaboration to high-profile conflict, which ended both their collaboration and their long-standing friendship.

“Incendies” – April 11

Powerful drama Denis Villeneuve 2010. The main characters of the film – brother and sister Simon and Zhanna – learn about the last will of their recently deceased mother. According to the will of the woman, her adult children must find their father, who for many years was considered dead. Simon and Jeanne learn that their mother has kept most of her biography from them – tragic and complex.

The plot is based partly on Wajdi Muawad’s play of the same name and partly on Suhi Beshara’s autobiography. In the year it was released, the tape was critically acclaimed by the professional film community and garnered several Oscar and BAFTA nominations.

Battle Royale (Batoru rowaiaru) – April 21

A bloodthirsty teen thriller starring Takeshi Kitano, in which the Japanese authorities initiate brutal games with high school students every year. Selected participants of 42 are sent to a deserted island where they must fight for three days to survive.

The 22-year-old film was remembered after the popularity of The Squid Game, a Netflix hit about the challenges of surviving in conditions of inhuman moral choice. Battle Royale is now available in theaters and mass viewing is known to improve the viewing experience.

Daddy, a remake of Denis Villeneuve’s film Fires – Gazeta, is a biography about boxer Garry Haft in the Russian comedy Tear It Off and Throw It Away by Kirill Sokolov, author of Die sensation. It will be released in domestic cinemas in April.
